Northwest Linguistics Conference 2009

The Northwest Linguistics Conference is an annual conference for graduate students in linguistics to share their work in a friendly atmosphere, and meet colleagues from other universities, both locally and internationally. The venue rotates on a four year cycle, between University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, and the University of Washington.

Call for Papers

Call Deadline: March 1, 2009 The Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia is pleased to host the Northwest Linguistics Conference from April 25-26 , 2009. We invite graduate and undergraduate students to submit abstracts for 30 minute talks (20 minute presentation + 10 minutes for discussion) in any area of theoretical or applied linguistics. Abstracts must be anonymous, at most one page long (a second page may be used only for examples and references) on a letter-size sheet (8''1/2 by 11'') with one-inch margins and typed in at least 12-point font. Abstracts must be submitted via email (nwlc2009@gmail.com) in PDF format. Abstracts that do not follow the above format will not be accepted. Submissions are limited to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author. Electronic submissions should have the abstract as an attachment and the subject header ''NWLC2009 abstract'', and include all the author information listed below in the body of the e-mail. The Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Western
Ontario is pleased to present the first Western Interdisciplinary
Student Symposium on Language Research (WISSLR), to be held March 6
(possibly 7), 2009. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of
the Masters program at Western, we are pleased to invite students of
all levels to submit abstracts on original research on language from a
range of disciplinary approaches. Topics may come from such areas as
Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Language Acquisition,
Psycholinguistics, Communication Disorders, Natural Language
Processing, Linguistic Anthropology, Linguistic Interfaces, Philosophy
of Language, and much more.

The symposium will be held at the University of Western Ontario, with
the possibility of streaming live to the internet (using WebCT/ Wimba
technology). We also welcome presentations from other locations via
the same means (all software downloadable for conference
participants).

Each participant will have 15 minutes for their presentation, and 5
minutes for questions and discussion. Students of all levels are
encouraged to participate. Works in progress are welcome.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words (plus title), to
wisslr@uwo.ca, by Friday January 9, 2009. Successful applicants will
be notified by Friday January 23, 2009. Please send your anonymous
abstract as an attachment, and include your name, school, and whether
you prefer to present in person or via the internet in the body of
your email. Partial travel assistance may be available for some
participants coming to London for this event.

The fourth PaPI conference will be hosted by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, from 17 to 18 June, 2009. Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia (PaPI) is an international conference aiming to bring together researchers interested in all areas of phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the relationship between the two. It aims at providing an interdisciplinary forum in Europe for discussion of phonetics and/or phonology and their related areas and their related areas, such as language acquisition, language variation and change, speech pathology and speech technology, the phonology-phonetics interface, and laboratory phonology work. The conference is hosted every two years by an Iberian university. The PaPI 2009 conference format will be the following: a two-day meeting including four oral sessions of twenty-minute presentations (plus ten-minute discussion) of submitted papers, two poster sessions, and two invited talks. The invited speakers of PaPI 2009 will be John Harris (University College London) and Martine Grice (University of Cologne). Following the main conference, two parallel workshops will be held.

The Third Students Conference of Linguistics in India (SCONLI-3) is
scheduled to be held between 19th February, 2009 - 21st February, 2009. We,
the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi invite research
papers in linguistics and related areas from the students within and outside
India.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Canadian Linguistic Association will hold its 2009 conference as part of the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities at Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada, from Saturday May 23 to Monday May 25, 2009. Members are invited to submit abstracts representing all areas of linguistics. Only members in good standing for 2009 may submit an abstract.

PLEASE NOTE that this year again our conference will last only THREE days instead of four as it has in the past. There will also be poster presentations and we strongly encourage all members, especially established colleagues, to submit poster abstracts.

ABSTRACT REQUIREMENTS (Please read carefully: Abstracts not conforming to these requirements will be excluded from consideration.)
1. Abstracts may be no longer than one (1) page, (21.6 x 27.9 cm / 81⁄2 x 11 in) single-spaced in a 12-point font, with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins, plus references.
2. a) A complete list of references cited in the abstract must also be submitted, although if on an additional page it will not be included in the program booklet.
b) In order to help ensure anonymity, abstracts should not contain excessive references to their authors' publications. Furthermore, the abstract should not contain acknowledgements for grants or to granting agencies.
c) References in the abstract should normally be limited to published works.
3. Abstracts should contain
a) a title;
b) a clear and explicit statement of the research question to be examined;
c) a clear statement of the research context, including key references;
d) an indication of the main arguments involved, including key examples, if applicable. In the case of empirical studies in progress, pilot results must be included;
e) a statement of the conclusions reached and an assessment of their significance.
4. Authors should identify themselves on the abstract submission form to be found on the submissions webpage; abstracts must be submitted in two copies, one anonymous and the other with name(s) and affiliation(s).
5. Members are limited to one individual and one joint abstract submission, or two joint submissions
6. Papers must be presented in the language used in the title of the abstract.

ABSTRACTS AND FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY, as either PDF (preferred), .DOC or .RTF files. If you use phonetic transcriptions or any other special symbols, please ensure that the necessary character fonts are embedded. TRAVEL GRANTS
The CLA receives funding from the SSHRCC to partially cover participants' travel expenses. In no case will a grant exceed the cost of a round-trip economy-class fare. APPEL AUX COMMUNICATIONS

L'Association canadienne de linguistique tiendra son congrès de 2009 lors du Congrès des sciences sociales et humaines à l'Université Carleton, Ottawa (Ontario), Canada, du samedi 23 mai au lundi 25 mai 2009. Les membres sont invités à soumettre des propositions de communication (résumés) portant sur tous les domaines de la discipline. Seuls les membres en règle pour l'année 2009 peuvent soumettre des résumés.

VEUILLEZ NOTER que cette année encore, notre congrès durera seulement TROIS jours, au lieu de quatre comme par le passé. Il y aura aussi des présentations par affiche : nous encourageons vivement tous les membres, en particulier les collègues chevronné-e-s, à soumettre des résumés pour des affiches.

EXIGENCES CONCERNANT LES RÉSUMÉS (Veuillez lire attentivement. Les résumés qui ne respectent pas ces exigences ne seront pas pris en considération.)
1. Les résumés ne doivent pas dépasser une page (21,6 x 27,9 cm soit 81⁄2 x 11 po) à simple interligne à l'aide d'une police de caractères 12 points avec des marges de 2,54 cm (1 pouce), plus les références.
2. a) Une bibliographie complète des textes cités dans le résumé doit l'accompagner ; si cela prend une page supplémentaire, celle-ci ne sera pas incluse dans le livret du programme.
b) Afin de préserver l'anonymat, les résumés ne doivent pas comporter de références superflues aux publications des auteur-e-s. De plus, aucune référence à des agences ou à des subventions de recherche ne doit figurer dans les résumés.
c) Normalement, les références citées dans le résumé doivent se limiter aux textes publiés.
3. Les résumés doivent comprendre :
a) un titre;
b) un énoncé clair et explicite du sujet de recherche examiné;
c) un énoncé clair du contexte de la recherche, y compris les références principales;
d) une présentation des principaux arguments ou expériences y compris, le cas échéant, les exemples les plus pertinents. Dans le cas d'études empiriques en cours, le résumé devrait inclure les résultats d'études pilotes;
e) des conclusions et une interprétation de leur signification.
4. Les auteur-e-s sont prié-e-s de s'identifier dans le formulaire de soumission de résumé que vous trouverez sur la page de soumission des résumés et de soumettre deux exemplaires de leur résumé (un résumé anonyme et un résumé avec vos noms et affiliations). On ne peut soumettre qu'un seul résumé comme auteur-e et un seul comme co-auteur-e, ou bien deux résumés comme co-auteur-e.
5. Les communications devront être présentées dans la langue utilisée dans le titre du résumé.

The 12th edition of BWTL | ABLT is coming to Ottawa. The aim of the workshop this year is to explore the concept of "features" in linguistics. From their use in syntax, semantics and phonology to their use in psycholinguistics and language acquisition, features are omnipresent in all grammatical descriptions. We invite presentations of works-in-progress that address these and other issues that deal with the concept of features in linguistics. In the spirit of the previous BWTL | ABLT workshops, presentations should be based on works-in-progress ONLY (theoretical problems, research questions, problematic data, new facts, good [or bad] ideas, etc.). Each presentation will be 10 minutes + 5 minutes for questions. Please submit a title and a short (200 words maximum) abstract by e-mail to: bwtl12@uottawa.ca Students are strongly encouraged to participate. As in previous years, the final format of the workshop will be decided upon based on the number and type of submissions received. If appropriate, presentations will be grouped and followed by a longer discussion period.

La 12ème édition de BWTL | ABLT aura lieu à Ottawa. Le but de l'atelier cette année est d'explorer le concept de « trait » en linguistique. De leur utilisation en syntaxe, sémantique et phonologie à leur utilisation en psycholinguistique et en acquisition des langues, les traits sont omniprésents dans la grammaire. Dans l'esprit des éditions précédentes de l'atelier BWTL | ABLT, les présentations doivent se baser sur des travaux en cours SEULEMENT (par ex. problème théorique, questions de recherche, données problématiques, faits nouveaux, bonnes [ou mauvaises] idées, etc.). Les présentations ne devraient pas dépasser 10 minutes + 5 minutes pour les questions. Veuillez soumettre par courriel un titre et un court résumé (de 200 mots au maximum) à l'adresse suivante : bwtl12@uottawa.ca Les étudiant(e)s sont particulièrement encouragé(e)s à soumettre un résumé. Comme les années précédentes, le format final de l'atelier sera déterminé en fonction de la nature et le nombre des résumés reçus. Si possible, les présentations seront regroupées et suivies d'une période plus longue de discussion.

The workshop will focus on the syntax and semantics of the concepts
count and mass in human grammar. An understanding of this issue is
central to the study of both the structure and meaning of the noun
phrase, which in turn relates to the structure of sentences through

Abstract (for 20 minute talks +10) should not exceed 2 pages including
references and data and should be anonymous. Please send the abstract
in PDF to yuying.su@utoronto.ca before October 31, 2008. In the body
